Philip Lieberman is a linguist at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, United States. Originally trained in phonetics, he wrote a dissertation on intonation. The remainder of his career has focused on topics in the evolution of language, and particularly the relationship between the evolution of the vocal tract and the evolution of speech and language. His work in this field stimulated considerable interest in this area.
Lieberman later became interested in photography and mountaineering, and has published on both in Switzerland.
He currently holds an endowed chair in the Department of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Brown University, and is also a professor in the Department of Anthropology.
